Solving the Pricing Problem in a Branch-and-Price Algorithm for Graph Coloring Using Zero-Suppressed Binary Decision Diagrams
نویسندگان
چکیده
Branch-and-price algorithms combine a branch-and-bound search with an exponentiallysized LP formulation that must be solved via column generation. Unfortunately, the standard branching rules used in branch-and-bound for integer programming interfere with the structure of the column generation routine; therefore, most such algorithms employ alternate branching rules to circumvent this difficulty. This paper shows how a zero-suppressed binary decision diagram (ZDD) can be used to solve the pricing problem for a generic branch-and-price algorithm, even in the presence of constraints imposed by branching decisions. This approach facilitates a much more direct solution method, and can improve convergence of the column generation subroutine. Computational results are presented showing the effectiveness of this method for the graph coloring problem.

متن کاملA Wide Branching Strategy for the Graph Coloring Problem
Branch-and-price algorithms for the graph coloring problem use an exponentially-sized independent set based integer programming formulation to produce usually tight lower bounds to enable more aggressive pruning in the branch-and-bound tree. One major problem inherent to any branch-and-price scheme for graph coloring is that in order to avoid destroying the pricing problem structure during colu...
متن کاملParallel Jobs Scheduling with a Specific Due Date: Asemi-definite Relaxation-based Algorithm
This paper considers a different version of the parallel machines scheduling problem in which the parallel jobs simultaneously requirea pre-specifiedjob-dependent number of machines when being processed. This relaxation departs from one of the classic scheduling assumptions. While the analytical conditions can be easily statedfor some simple models, a graph model approach is required when confli...
متن کاملSolving a nurse rostering problem considering nurses preferences by graph theory approach
Nurse Rostering Problem (NRP) or the Nurse Scheduling Problem (NSP) is a complex scheduling problem that affects hospital personnel on a daily basis all over the world and is known to be NP-hard.The problem is to decide which members of a team of nurses should be on duty at any time, during a rostering period of, typically, one month. It is very important to efficiently utilize time and effort, ...
متن کاملMining simple and complex patterns efficiently using Binary Decision Diagrams
Pattern mining is a knowledge discovery task which is useful for finding interesting data characteristics. Existing mining techniques sometimes suffer from limited performance in challenging situations, such as when finding patterns in high-dimensional datasets. Binary Decision Diagrams and their variants are a compact and efficient graph data structure for representing and manipulating boolean...
